Batteries in solar lighting systems are used to store electricity generated by solar panels. This allows the system to operate at night or during periods of low sunlight when the solar panels cannot generate enough electricity to power the lights. Type

You will find 4 different types of rechargeable batteries used to power your solar flood lights - Lithium Phosphate (LiFePO4), Lead Acid, Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd).

Cheaper, lower wattage solar lights are powered by Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries in standard AA or AAA battery sizes. These batteries are small, lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to replace, making them ideal for low-power solar lighting.


If choosing between lights using Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries, Ni-MH batteries have many advantages over Ni-Cd batteries, such as higher capacity and longer operating time on a single charge, which is great for solar lighting. The only battery that has more capacity on a weight-by-weight basis than Ni-MH is Li-ion, which also costs more. While you'll find Ni-Cd batteries really only used in low wattage solar lights, Ni-MH batteries are used in a much wider range, including some higher wattage solar security lights.


High power solar flood lights, on the other hand, are either powered by lithium-ion (usually lithium iron phosphate, which has the greatest advantage of all lithium-ion batteries for solar lighting) or lead-acid batteries. Lithium phosphate (LiFePO4) is the more widely used battery for solar flood lights compared to lead-acid batteries because it has a very high specific energy which means the battery can carry more energy while remaining smaller in size and weight, good cycle life up to 2000 cycles and completely maintenance free. The only real downside to these batteries is that they are expensive to manufacture, although lithium-ion batteries are getting cheaper and cheaper these days. Lead acid batteries (best known for use as car batteries) are also a common rechargeable battery choice for high powered solar flood lights.


While you'll see lithium-phosphate batteries used in just about every solar light from small front door lights to powerful outdoor floodlights, lead-acid batteries are only used for really high-powered lighting. In contrast to lithium phosphates, they have very low energy density, so the batteries have to be made larger and heavier to provide the same capacity as other rechargeable batteries. The main advantage of lead-acid batteries is their low cost, which helps reduce the overall cost of solar lighting fixtures. In solar and portable lighting, special valve-regulated gell cell and AGM lead-acid batteries are used, as they operate virtually maintenance-free during their lifetime.




Capacity

Rechargeable battery capacity shows the maximum amount of energy that can be stored in the battery, measured in ampere-hours (Ah) or milliampere hours (mAh). Generally, the more Ah the battery has, the longer it will run. On average, Ni-Cd cells have the smallest capacity for solar lights - approx. 600 mAh, followed by a 2000 mAh Ni-MH battery. Li-ion batteries for solar lights range in capacity from 2000mAh to 6000mAh. As mentioned earlier, lead-acid batteries are only used for high power lighting, so they require higher capacity batteries to power the lamps. Typical lead-acid batteries range in capacity from 4000mAh to 7000mAh.

Battery capacity alone won't tell you how long you can power the lights on batteries alone (factors like brightness, solar panel wattage, presence of motion sensors, and other factors are also important), but it can give you more information there Depth information for the overall quality of the lights off.
