A solar flood light runs entirely on energy collected from the sun using solar panels, so it can be installed almost anywhere the sun can reach the panels. When looking for outdoor flood lights, you may be faced with a choice—whether to install regular wired flood lights or opt for a solar-powered option. Some time ago, the decision was simple - install wired flood lights since there are few reliable solar powered lights on the market. But that's changed a lot now thanks to the growing popularity of solar panels and renewable energy, and you're likely to find that electronics stores and online stores offer even more solar flood lights than regular light fixtures. This time sensors like motion detectors and photo sensors play an important role in solar lighting as they help conserve battery power and turn on lights only when necessary. Solar lights on the market use solar panels to charge the built-in battery during the day, and then use the built-in battery power solar floodlight at night. Solar lights without sensing function will automatically turn on the lights when the light is dark to a certain extent. The solar lights with induction function will only light up the floodlights when they sense someone, so those with induction function will save more power.

1. Motion sensor

The motion sensor is responsible for detecting motion within a certain range around the floodlight and turning on the light when motion is detected. The three most common types of motion detectors are active sensors (detect motion by sending out microwaves and monitoring changes in the response time of the waves), passive infrared sensors or PIR (detect motion by scanning infrared heat changes in the monitored area), and combination sensor. Virtually all motion activated solar lights will use a PIR sensor to detect motion as they are easy to adjust and won't pick up the motion of random objects such as tree branches or wind blown objects which is often the case outdoors.

2. Adjustable PIR sensor

Adjustable motion sensors are a must-have feature if you need security floodlights. Most motion activated solar flood lights will allow adjustment of various specifications of the PIR sensor such as detection range and distance, delay time and light sensitivity. The range and distance settings determine the angle at which motion can be detected, most motion sensors allow detection of motion within a 180-degree angle around the sensor, while some special sensors can even detect motion within 360 degrees around. Distance allows to adjust how far the detector can pick up motion. The delay or detection time setting determines the amount of time the lights stay on after motion is detected. The sensitivity setting determines how dark it needs to be for the sensor to start picking up motion. This setting allows controlling whether the sensor also works during the day, at dusk, or only at night when it is dark outside.

3. Dusk to dawn (photoelectric sensor)

A photoelectric sensor or dusk to dawn sensor is a must have feature for every solar flood light. It detects when it's getting dark outside and automatically turns on the light when it's a certain brightness or dark, and conversely, turns off the light when it's bright outside in the morning, so you don't waste battery lighting during the day. Without this sensor, you would need to manually turn the lights on when it gets dark and off in the morning. How to know if the solar flood light is equipped with this sensor? If the light's description says it's a "dusk to dawn light" or "turns on automatically at night," you can be sure it's equipped with a photoelectric sensor. I recommend staying away from any solar powered floodlights that don't have a motion sensor or photo sensor, as the floodlight is just wasting energy to illuminate during the day, or you have to turn it on and off manually, which essentially defeats the purpose of solar lighting.
